The Covenant Shelter of New London was established
in 1983 as a compact between two neighboring parishes on Huntington Street in
New London, CT - St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and St. James Episcopal
Church. Fortuitously, this effort and commitment on the part of two faith communities
coincided with the enactment of a state mandate that each town operate an emergency
shelter or charter with one in the area to provide temporary shelter, food and
support to homeless individuals and families. The Shelter began with a volunteer
director and in 1985 transitioned to a professional Executive Director. The ecumenical
values that established the Shelter have imbued its governance and operational
philosophy: respect for dignity of the individuals and families who are guests
of the shelter.
