Covenant Shelter receives $4860 from Shea Perpetual Trust
New London, CT – The James P. and Mary E. Shea Perpetual Trust, Bank of America, Trustee, awarded Covenant Shelter of New London, Inc. a $4860 grant to provide on-site bus tickets and long distance transportation services to clients.
“The funding from the James P. and Mary E. Shea Perpetual Trust will enable residents at Covenant Shelter to get to jobs and job interviews, medical appointments, social service agencies, educational programs, school registration and parent teacher conferences,” stated Catherine Foley, executive director of Covenant Shelter.
Last year, Covenant Shelter distributed nearly 1,000 bus tickets to a total of 110 residents which were used to look for work and attend job interviews and fairs; meet with social service providers; attend Social Security and Veterans’ Administration appointments; access medical services; attend college and adult education programs; meet with children’s teachers and school service providers.
“This grant is all about easing the stress of homelessness, providing access to opportunities and services and instilling hope for a brighter future,” Foley continued.
The Covenant Shelter of New London was established in 1983 by St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church and St. James Episcopal Church to meet the emergency needs of the area’s homeless. For over twenty-six Covenant Shelter has provided clean, safe, dignified shelter and meals for up to 35 men, women and children each day.

New London, CT – The Covenant Shelter of New London, Inc. will host a fundraising car wash on Saturday, May 22, from 9 AM – 1 PM at 42 Jay Street, New London (St. Mary Star of the Sea Church parking lot).
Members of the newly formed Rotaract Club of New London will join members of the Covenant Shelter board of directors at the car wash. Suggested donation is $10 for an exterior car wash and interior vacuum. All proceeds will benefit the Covenant Shelter of New London.

Covenant Shelter of New London Announces New Executive Director

Merrylyn Weaver, chair of the board of directors, announced the appointment of Catherine Foley as the new executive director of the Covenant Shelter of New London. “We are excited to welcome Catherine Foley to our organization,” stated Weaver.
Foley, a resident of New London and owner of MeetingWorks LLC, previously served as director of the New London Development Corporation’s Community Development Initiative where she implemented the Parent Leadership Training Institute and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. In that capacity, Foley chaired a regional forum on early care and development as an economic development strategy co-sponsored by NLDC and United Way of Southeastern Connecticut.
“Catherine’s business and community development background coupled with her personal commitment to service will complement the agency’s vision to provide temporary shelter in an environment that respects the dignity of the individuals and families who are affected by homelessness,” continued Weaver. “We believe that she will be an active partner in the search for ways to end homelessness.”
Covenant Shelter of New London, located at 42 Jay Street, was established in 1983 as a compact between St. James Episcopal Church and St. Mary Star of the Sea Church to provide emergency shelter for those in need and to provide for the spiritual welfare, nourishment and shelter needs of the poor, distressed and underprivileged on an interim basis. Covenant Shelter has 35 beds available for single-parent families with children and single men and women.
